Hackney Marshes

This is one of my favourite places in East London, and oh so close to my house. The canal stretches for miles and miles, through the Jewish suburbs, away and past the East. It's full of marvelous creatures; for example today we saw several kestrels, birds, fish, and giant slugs. There are also abundant supplies of tadpoles, frogs and newts. On a day like today when the rain was falling softly, all these creatures seemed to be drawing nearer the surface. The bullrushes were out, and pearly morning glory clambered around long, rich purple flowers I don't know the name of. On the far side of the park we discovered strange industrial buildings over looking pools of deep water. As dusk falls, trains move across this beautiful landscape like the glowing, snake-like trains that glide through Hayao Miyazaki's 2001 film 'Spirited Away'. Sigh. And the airplanes, always airplanes. London's skies so full of air traffic. Come visit!
