The closest national park is but a 10 minute drive away...

This is the Athalassa National Park, Lefkosia. I've only been once - in the heat of the late afternoon - so my visit was a short one. However it was something else to be bathed in the sounds of insects once more. Surprisingly, where I'm living is strangely silent. The odd bird cry, a passing car, the sound of the woman across the road yelling at her maids. No insect noise. But you come here and the sound is wonderfully deafening. Apparently all four of Cyprus' owls breed here... so must venture here again - the next time at dusk with a thermos of tea and a sandwich and I'll just get lost in my newly found forest.
